Are you a smoker? Do you have pets or children or if the carpet is in a high traffic area it should be cleaned every six to nine months depending on how exposed it is.

When you live in a home with kids, pets and smokers it is recommended that you have the carpets cleaned as often as every three months, assuming that the grade of carpet can withstand such frequency. You may be able to clean them less frequently if you have more hard surfaced floors than carpets..
